Elementary Guidance Counselor
Job Summary
Remains readily available to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity.
Reports To: Building Principal
Qualifications
- Must have a valid Guidance Counselor certificate.
- A Master’s degree, or equivalent, representing intensive course work in the principles and practice of educational guidance, the ASCA model, educational testing and measurement, counseling, the organization and administration of guidance services, and the psychology of learning.
- Must have a New Mexico Public Education Counseling License
- Must complete a finger-print background check
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- In conjunction with the principal, interprets the school’s objectives to students, parents and community.
- Works with teachers/staff to familiarize them with services offered by the guidance department.
- Assists students in interpreting test scores and other pertinent data.
- Assists as required in maintaining attendance records, cumulative progress records and activity records.
- Works to relieve student’s educational and personal handicaps.
- Works to discover and develop special abilities of students.
- Provides individual and group counseling as needed.
- Assists with registration, orientation process, class scheduling
- Assists parents and community in understanding educational programs and opportunities.
- Adheres to Board and administrative directives.

Appropriate placement on the AMSD Salary Schedule and the Aztec School District Calendar.
Evaluation
Performance of duties will be evaluated at least annually in accordance with Aztec School Board Policy.
Physical Rating Level
This position will require the employee to function at a “Medium” physical capacity as defined by Worker’s Compensation Statutes. “Medium” physical capacity indicates the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally or up to 25 pounds frequently.
