Assistant Athletic Coach

 

Job Summary

To instruct athletes in the fundamentals skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.  At the same time, the student shall receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline and self-confidence.

 

Reports To: Athletic Director/School Principal

 

Qualifications

  1. Valid New Mexico Coaching Certification
  2. Employment as a teacher in the Aztec Municipal School District (Preferred).
  3. Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport.
  4. Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  5. The coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and at the same time must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.

Desired Qualifications

 

  1. Has a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Aztec Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation by the entire staff of the sports program.
  2. Has knowledge of existing system, state and NMAA regulations and implements them consistently.
  3. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
  4. Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and at season’s end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants.
  5. Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  6. Perform such other duties, which may be assigned by the athletic director.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Is responsible for team selection, athlete position and playing time.
  2. Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by coaching staff. Designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  3. Encourages professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance according to school policy.
  4. Assists the athletic director in scheduling, requesting transportation, and other special needs for tournaments, or playoff events.
  5. Assists in the necessary preparation to scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.
  6. Completes reports of all athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to athletic office within 24 hours.
  7. Directs, student managers, assistants and statisticians.
  8. Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
  9. Participates in the budget process with the athletic director. Recommends equipment guidelines as to type, style, color or technical specifications. Is responsible for operating within budget appropriations.
  10. Is accountable for all equipment and reports the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment and submits annual inventory and current records.
  11. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment. Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.
  12. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games. Checks on general cleanliness of the facility.
  13. Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building when custodians are not on duty.
  14. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
  15. Organizes parents, coaches, players and guests for pre-season meetings.
  16. Play an active role in the booster club. Informing them of rules, policies, and changes.
  17. Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes that are not participating in sports. Promote sports outside the school through news media, youth organizations or in any other publicity vehicle.
  18. Ensures quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  19. Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans.
  20. Presents information to the news media concerning game results, awards, etc.

Supervises 

Assistant coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and the respective principal.

Evaluation

Performance of duties will be evaluated at least annually in accordance with Aztec School Board Policy.

 

Physical Rating Level

 

This position will require the employee to function at a “Medium” physical capacity as defined by Worker’s Compensation Statutes.  “Medium” physical capacity indicates the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally or up to 25 pounds frequently.
